Overheard on TeeVee

“There’s no credit crunch at Room Source!” Someone’s desperate. I’ve also noticed lately that every other commercial is “all we need is your signature! We’ll give you a fucking car AND pay the first month’s payment! 0% interest! We need to improve our numbers before we tank all the way!”
All you need to know about lipstick and pigs.

Mr McCain had used the same analogy to criticise a health care plan presented by former Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton last year.
End of controversy. The Hipocriticans are going to find that one hard to dispute.

doing something so stupid, you need to realize that there is a history of trauma behind that self destructive behavior, and not just write them off as some stupid punk.
Another reason to distrust massmedia

As if you needed more: Fox vs. CNN vs. WWE - I thought it was gonna be some trash talk on Fox News, but girl was I surprised and delighted. I’m definitely puttin this hombre on my google reader.

So what is this house advantage the Republicans have? It’s the press. There is no more fourth estate. Wait, hold on…I’m not going down some esoteric path with theories on the deregulation of the media and corporate bias and CNN versus Fox…I mean it: there is no more functioning press in this country. And without a real press the corporate and religious Republicans can lie all they want and get away with it. And that’s the 51% advantage.Think this is some opinion being wryly posited to titillate other bloggers and inspire dialogue with Tucker Carlson or Gore Vidal? Fuck that. Four corporations own all the TV channels. All of them. If they don’t get ratings they get canceled or fired. All news is about sex, blame and anger, and fear. Exposing lies about amounts of money taken from lobbyists and votes cast for the agenda of the last eight years does not rate. The end.
So why not direct people to some real journalists, using the internet you talk about later on, instead of just saying the internet is “50-50.” Point people to DemocracyNow! They’re the ones out there getting arrested to bring you news from the streets around the RNC, where people were getting beat by police for being journalists. Don’t just piss on about how current media sucks, help people that are pissed off about how current media sucks find exceptional jewels in a sea of crap.

In England the history of the United States is the Revolution, the Crisis of Slavery, the New Deal, and the Civil Rights movement—the fulfillment, over time, of the liberal promises written in 1776, made good at last even to a people once considered chattels.
What? You don’t occasionally check Blog ‘o the West for an intelligent history lesson?

Reading a Reuters article about Madonna’s latest controversy, get to this gem in the closing paragraphs:
“We’re in a sad situation if we’re turning to entertainers for political wisdom,” he told Reuters.
Said the man who belongs to the party of Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The party that hails Ronald Reagan more than Lincoln.
Binaural Bullshit
August 20th, 2008
I don’t usually comment on BS like this, but…
USA Today is really fucking stupid. They are talking about ‘binaural beats’ as digital drugs.
The only thing binaural beats can do is help stimulate certain kinds of brainwaves - and they do this by offsetting the left-right channels of your headphones by 3, 5, 8 or 13 Hz etc - which you can’t audibly hear, but your brain can detect the cycle of offset and synchronize your brainwaves to the same pattern.
Drugs do affect your brainwaves, but brainwaves alone will not cause complex druglike effects, especially if you know anything about neurochemistry and the many parts of the reward systems of your brain that drugs stimulate. The article is Am-Scare-Ica at it’s best. Oh no! Our children are listening to music that will put their brains into a state of zen-like meditation (and yes, I know Zen means meditation, but most people don’t.)
FDA Redux

Or how I learned to stop trusting my government not to kill me for someone else’s profit:
Eat right, exercise, don’t get killed off by ‘medication’ for your preventable illness (type-2 diabetes).
Amylin and Eli Lilly said in a statement that patients taking Byetta have shown “very rare case reports of pancreatitis with complications or with a fatal outcome.” The companies added that diabetes patients are already at increased risk of pancreatitis compared with healthy patients.
And, seriously, giving people “already at increased risk of pancreatitis” a drug that can cause pancreatitis? Irresponsible.
The FDA says so, huh?

Scientists at the Food and Drug Administration said the trace amounts of bisphenol A that leach out of food containers were not a threat to infants or adults.
Brought to you by the same scientists that declared Vioxx “safe.”
